Any news of Oracle's progress into the FOA market? Is this a sleeping giant or hype?

If Ellison wants to be a hardware/os company soooo bad...

Why doesn't he propose to Scott that they merge SUNW and ORCL and be done with it? Then he and Scott can go off to beat IBM together and MSFT will be the non-issue it was destined to be when IBM ignored the whole desktop thing to begin with.

<Inside Oracle, the project is dubbed "Raw Iron" because its technologists think Oracle8I could run without an operating system, Ellison said.>

OK technologists, step forward and explain yourselves. The sysadms of the world are not sleeping tonight because of you...

<"We are not going into the operating system business--we just don't think one is necessary," Ellison said. "We think Intel [chips] can run Oracle8i natively," meaning without an operating system.>

That explains a lot about the NT port, Larry. No wonder the freakin' GUI tools suck. Hope the Web tools are MUCH better.

<"If it's only Oraclel8i, they don't need much of an operating system," Ellison said. "If you're only running Oracle, you don't care what's underneath.">

Nice to know I don't have to do capacity planning or equipment evaluations anymore... Does 8i run on a Waring? Then I can run OLTP and DSS applications and make drinks at the same time? I'd like the microkernel with the shaken, not stirred option please.

No wonder the stock was down Monday. I hate it when he does this...

Try the anti-dumping statutes instead. I find it hard to believe that SQL*Server the way it is bundled is being sold above its cost of production.
