I just got home from an exhausting day at Comdex. Here are my observations:

Iomega: Much less flash than last year. Giving out the usual stuff
but not dominating. According to staff-250m drive will ship
next month. Saw many partners items including Roland, Stryker
Web TV Clone andLexmark that are going to ship with drives. Some shipping now and all to be shipping by March. Many more products than I outlined here. Could not get a definite answer on whether the OEM 250 will be shipped at a profit. The SCSI and parallel are profitable at 199.99 retail. Saw actual working 250 mb drive. Several products with Clik, some shipping now and several early 1999. Overall interest of attendees was very high and area was crowded all day. About one in four people carrying IOM shopping bags.I tried to wangle an invitation to the press luncheon at The Beach tommorrow but executive wouldn't bite. Staff felt that HiFD was toast now. Staff also said that 4 months supply of SPARQ was for sale but that wholesalers were treating it like toxic waste. Did not foresee problem with firesale prices for these doorstops (My choice of words).

Castlewood: Really pouring it on. Stayed for show by pretty girl
Lisa Menna who gave song and dance act on Orb and MR
drive technology.Giveaways included a noisemaker called
Clak. Overall the display was low rent and it looked
like they were tight financially. Saw the Orb. It does
not have the same standard of manufacture as IOM ZIP.
Fit and finish are poor.Although many were on display,
I was not able to see one working. Pretty and very young
exec told me they would be shipping in early 1999.
Definitely not available today. Professed not to be
disturbed about IOM 250 Zip. A great deal of IOM bashing
by staff. No OEM drives being made yet.

Imation: Lots of long faces when I mentioned 250 ZIP drive. Staff
unaware of new product to meet this challenge. Saw a
variety of OEM drives in various machines.

Sony: Huge display and mobbed all day. I couldn't get in to
see HiFD. Will try again tommorrow.

If anyone has specific questions for me to ask, please send them to me
and I will try to get answers tommorrow. I am leaving at 7:30 A.M. tommorrow to hear Charles Wang of CA but I will check when I get up.
I am an investor not an engineer so please make your questions simple
enough for me to understand. Overall, I am greatly encouraged by IOM
this year and I saw and heard nothing that would make me want to sell.
I think that they are going to sell a gazillion disks in the years
to come.

Long on IOM and a host of others. I hope all of you get so rich that you can't even count the money.
