Christian, you can bet that Etrade did not reverse any short trades which were covered at a loss on AVCO. I have also had short trades "annulled" on various brokers. The worst case was one where I covered at a profit but the stock continued down. They reversed the short but not the long where I covered and left me with a losing long position in a dawg stock that I was trying to short. After my loud protest they also reversed the long. After more protests they refunded the trade fees. But I lost all the profits.
