Further Note: The PC Week Article reminds me of how Sun "crushed" industry leader Apollo Computer in the work-station arena many years ago.

Except in this case, Sun has a head start in the market place using a standardized and already accepted Unix OS (Solaris) that Intel and Hewlett Packard are trying to develop as a custom product (Merced and then McKinley). Sun already has a 64 bit Solaris out in the marketplace and by mid-2000, should be well entrenched.

Maybe the real threat is Compaq and their DEC designed Alpha chip. But they have to wait for NT 5.0 and then 6.0.
