I understand your point and agree with it technically.

You could argue that a 486 optimized for 0.25 speeds is enough for most folks. It would run at several hundred megaherz and cost in $10 range to manufacture.

We all know that the MMX stuff Intel addedd to Pentium was a joke and completely worthless, but it sure sold a lot of CPU's at much higher prices.

We could go on and on but the point is that customers want the latest and greatest etc. even if it's pretty useless, costs more to manufacture etc.
