David and TokyoMex,
Great Furby links !! David, I can't see much point in any kind
of advertising/promos until they can keep Furby on the shelves for a
week or so but it's Hasbro's/McDonald's money I guess. What a sad
sight that autopsy was !
I first read about Furby in GRIN's 97 annual report and thought..
'they'll never make this thing', then I read the Sept 'Wired' and
thought 'they'll NEVER have this for Christmas'. But I changed my
tune when I saw pictures of FAO Schwartz with lots for sale and lines
of people around their building. Then I heard local stores were
getting deliveries but every time I went, they were gone (I need 3
for Christmas). I've liked GRIN for a long time as a value play
but the synergy with Furby was too much too resist... and so this
thread.

Good luck to you.

Frank

(From one of the many Furby websites:)
What Is A Furby?
Furbies are plush animatronic toys that have been hailed as the most advanced toy
in the world for around $30. They have a resemblance of Gizmo, from the movie
Gremlins. It also looks kind of like an owl. There are a variety of colors of Furbies
to choose from. Each Furby has it's own name and personality.

What Can It Do?
Furbies are a revolutionary toy because they react with the world around them on
their own. Each Furby can move, talk, hear, see (light and dark, they can't actually
see, per say), feel, and communicate with other Furbies. If you placed 2 Furbies
together they will talk, laugh, or catch a cold from one of them. If one Furby is
crying, the other will sing to cheer it up. Furbies can play a multitude of games,
from hide and seek, to simon says. They can sleep, and best of all, they never die.
Each Furby can speak 100 words in its native tongue, Furbish, and another 100 in
English. These words can from 1000+ phrases.

Who Invented It?
Dave Hampton, a former Mattel programmer, is credited with inventing the toy we
know as Furby. He decided to design a new type of virtual pet after seeing the
success of Tamagotchis and Giga Pets. However, he did not want a little 2D
animated keychain pet, he wanted a totally interactive 3D toy that could talk, move,
and learn.

Later, after he built a prototype Furby, he went out looking for a company to sell it
to. He found Tiger Electronics, now a division of Hasbro, and the rest is history. GRIN is the exclusive Furby distributor/Canada.
