Not in theory - in practice! We have stand-alone portable
CD players costing much less than $100. Why not a Walk-ZIP[tm]*
which has the advantage that YOU assemble the music to
your taste.

Allen,
sure it is costly, but the technology is still in its infancy and you got the same problem with digital cameras - expensive memory chips. Wouldn't want to lug a zip drive around with you everytime you use a camera?<g>
How about this matchbox size hard disk that has been developped by IBM - doesn't it hold at least 1 Gig? Now that gets us out of the dilemma, not a measly zip drive! I just don't think the zip/music combination will have a chance in the long run.
