Bill, thanks a bunch for the press release showing that webMethods are using ObjectStore. I was disappointed that MSFT were not using ObjectStore for XML, but now it turns out that in fact they are. I know the Oracle crowd like to sneer at Microsoft, but they are successful, you can't take that away from them. And we all agree that ODIS needs a bit more success to rub off on it.

As for your comments about ODIS management, I have no first-hand knowledge of how they operate, so it would not be reasonable for me to comment much. I have met people who have met Bowman, and they give me a clear impression that he knows shat he is doing, and that he works very hard for stockholders.

Open Market Inc. could have acknowledged that its new LivePublish software is powered by ObjectStore:

Open Market Delivers XML Support

BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Open Market, Inc. (Nasdaq: OMKT - news), a leading provider of Internet commerce and information publishing software, today announced that its newest Folio product, LivePublishâ„¢, takes full advantage of the XML standard to help customers deliver web-based information management solutions. LivePublish is a comprehensive, enterprise-strength product for the production and secure delivery of information via the Web, including the public Internet, intranets, and extranets.

''Open Market has a rich history in leading and supporting Internet industry standards,'' said Jeff Bussgang, vice president of marketing. ''We are excited about our comprehensive XML support because we believe it provides a powerful way to deliver and share information over the Internet. Our customers can confidently use our standards-based tools to create information collections that leverage the benefits of XML.''

XML in LivePublish

LivePublish provides a high level of support for various industry standards, including XML. LivePublish stores, indexes, and categorizes XML documents so users can search information using standard Web browsers. With XML, publishers can uniquely tag content to allow users to focus a search on information within a particular topic. For example, a medical publisher can tag the word ''penicillin'' using an <allergies> tag so the user only gets search results for the word penicillin within the context of the topic group ''allergies''.

In addition to supporting native XML documents, various LivePublish components use XML for data in the following ways:

The LivePublish index sheet is based on XSL (extensible style language) and maps both XML and HTML tags to specified fields. This extends focused searching capabilities to both XML and HTML.
The LivePublish ''makefile'' uses XML to define the contents of a LivePublish container, or infobase.
The LivePublish site administrator tool uses XML to configure the contents of a LivePublish site.

More about LivePublish

LivePublish gives customers the freedom to author and manage content using their system of choice by providing a standard interface to any open authoring tool and content management system.

Using standard Web browsers, end users obtain focused search results at the sub-document level through powerful searching and navigation tools such as: next/previous hit and next/previous document buttons, an integrated and instantly syncronized table of contents, a ranked hit list, reference window, and customized search templates.
