Thread,

Interesting article from Barron's on the Asian crisis from some market analysts' perspective, plus some stock picks for those of you who follow the Region.

Incidentally, one of the picks is the familiar Cafe de Coral in HK (Chinese fast food) which sells among other things, the traditional Chinese delicacy (fung tzau, or Phoenix claws, aka chicken feet). The analyst likes the stock, but not the chicken feet, I gathered <gg>.

On the Asian crisis, the overall view is somewhat pessimistic in terms of the speed of recovery. Their view is that we have not seen the bottom yet. The more I think about this, the more convinced I am that this view is most probable, not based on orthodox economic analysis, but because the economy is Asia is subordinate to the political processes. The answers to economic reforms (and hence recovery and prosperity) are all then, it's just that to implement these means many of those in power in Asia would have to forego their political power bases and careers [sort of like signing their own death warrants :-))]. Hence the will to implement is lagging, so we see many varied examples of foot-dragging.
