Craig,

"an external Microdrive is asking for trouble."

Now that's what I have been looking for. The reasons I think the Microdrive won't make it in consumer land is:

1) The entry cost is high. Granted you will get more MB per $, but you only get the savings when you buy 200MB plus. What would be the lowest cost of a Microdrive? The CompactFlash solid state memory will be cheaper in the 2, 4, 8, 10, 20, and I believe 40MB sizes if those sizes were even available from IBM. Can someone verify this?

2) The fact is that the CF module is removable for expansion purposes. So the ruggedness is important for outside the camera. I don't think consumers really want $200 CompactFlash modules that can break if you drop them on concrete.

Any other thoughts? I think that the Microdrive may be good for WinCE machines looking for another drive, but I don't think its a winner for the digital camera market.

Cheers,

Rex

"What is the value of not having moving parts?"

Ask the Tin Woodsman. Now, if I only had a heart...
