BEIJING (Nov. 17) XINHUA - Ma Yulan, a 41-year-old woman who organized a prostitution ring, was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of Beijing today. Ma has become the first woman to receive the death penalty in Beijing for dealing in prostitution. It was not reported whether Ma would exercise her right to file an appeal to a higher court. Organizing a prostitution ring carries new penalties under the country's revised Criminal Law. In addition to receiving the death penalty, Ma was deprived of her political rights and forfeited her personal property. Ma opened a restaurant and sauna business in Beijing's Shijingshan District in June, 1996, and turned it into an underground brothel business that employed local women.
