And therein lies a great deal of the resistance to deployments. ILECs are incredibly anal when it comes to uniformity of delivery over a particular serving area.

MCI Offers Nationwide DSL Internet Access

November 23, 1998

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A.,: MCI WorldCom
[NASDAQ:WCOM] has introducednationwide
deployment of its DSL (digital subscriber
line)- based Internet access services. The
services are available through its UUNET
network.

The company expects 400 points of presence
(PoPs) to be available by the end of the
year, with 600 PoPs available in March, 1999.
MCI is also hoping for 1,000 PoPs by the end
of 1999.

According to the company, the services
"provide economical, higher-bandwidth
Internet access to online service providers
and smaller businesses."

The company is claiming that this is the "first
time that these groups have had access to a
fully integrated, national DSL service from a
single supplier company and a single
contract."

As a result, America Online and EarthLink will
reportedly start trials of the new service by
the end of the year.

The company's PoPs include facilities from
MCI WorldCom and third party LECs (local
exchange carriers) and CLECs (competitive
local exchange carriers).
