Dave, I'm not sure here, but what if each Zip has a kind of unique serial number that cannot be changed with normal storage writes from regular Zip drives. Then the coded music/message/whatever would have that serial number as part of the encryption key; and could only be decoded from that single disk. I don't know if this is what's done though.

I'm just guessing here, but I would assume that the playback software would have to have special logic to prevent playback if the serial number of the disk doesn't match the serial number of the disk that the music/data was recorded on.

I'm also assuming that Iomega would give users the option of "moving" their data around (which would invalidate the original but enable the new copy) and archive/restore their data.
