Nancy, that is an interesting take on the Intel/Transmeta discussion. Hal must have made quite an impression--or you are one of those people with great movie recall...

Here is the other-worldly title of the patent (which apparently was granted just in the last few weeks--and thus the news), and also, what I think is a better article from the NY Times. I've noticed C/NET is prone towards hype and gross errors in their reporting.

The patent is enigmatically described as "Memory Controller for a Microprocessor for Detecting a Failure of Speculation on the Physical Nature of a Component Being Addressed." It was issued on November 3, 1998 and cites "inventors" Edmund J. Kelly, Robert Cmelik, and Malcom John Wing.
