Anyone know why Loral would supply sub-systems when we could have (did?) bid on the entire sat?

ORBITAL WINS JAPANESE DBS CONTRACT

Orbital Sciences Corp. [ORB] is celebrating the recognition of its geosynchronous satellite design after Japanese blue-chip
company Broadcasting Satellite System Corp. (BSAT) selected Orbital to construct and launch two DBS birds for the BSAT-2
program. The contract elevates Orbital to the ranks of the major GEO satellite builders, adding weight to a deal secured earlier this
year to build two GEO satellites for New York-based VisionStar Inc. Financial details for the BSAT deal were not disclosed, but it
is likely they will be similar to the $260 million Orbital will collect from VisionStar.

The BSAT-2 satellite design is based on Orbital's NovaStar platform, which the company says provides high reliability as well as
advanced performance and capacity in a relatively low-cost system. BSAT, an affiliate of Japan's NHK broadcast network,
currently operates the BSAT-1a and BSAT-1b satellites, which provide analog TV to more than 12 million customers. BSAT-2a
and -2b, the two new birds, will more than double the channel capacity of BSAT's network with their digital broadcasting
capabilities.

The birds will launch on Ariane rockets in the fall of 2000 and the spring of 2001, and will operate from BSAT's 110 degrees E
orbital slot. The high-power Ku-band communications payload will be built and supplied to Orbital by Loral Space and
Communications [LOR].
