Assuming that there isn't a sudden burst of machine buying, I think the sentiments of that article are very correct. The interesting question, is the extent to which this will benefit the various merchant mask makers (PLAB, DPMI, MASK) as well as machine makers (ETEC and UTEK). For MASK, my guess is that it will make their recent investment in the 2 ETEC machines appear particularly prescient. With PLAB and DPMI, their excess capacity is probably primarily located in Asia. I wonder how easy it is to use Asian capacity to produce masks for US/European market. Sounds like it should be easy, but... The other issue is the speed with which chip producers learn how to produce chips at 0.25 µM and below at a yield that justifies ramping up production. For example, as far as I know, LSI is still not producing commercial quantities of 0.25 µM stuff at their new Fab in Gresham, OR.
