Custom CDs are available right now. Of course, so far it is just holiday music, but they appear to be up and running and could easily expand now, not in a year.

Online music seller CDnow (CDNW) introduced its custom CD sales venture, Custom Shop. The company said that in less than 10 minutes, a shopper can assemble up to 12 tracks for a custom holiday-themed compact disc and place the order for the disc to be produced and shipped. Performers whose works have been licensed for the custom compilations include Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Mahalia Jackson and Kathie Lee Gifford. CDnow said cable shopping TV network QVC will also be selling gift cards for custom CDs Thursday morning.

Kmart Corp. (KM) opened a music retailing Web site at musicfavorites.com. It was co-developed by music distributor Handleman Co. (HDL) Kmart has been on the Web since May of this year, when Kmart.com launched a health and fitness site offering vitamins and fitness equipment Since then, sites featuring weekly specials and household products for new home owners have been added. >>
