<OT> A friends of mine father is quite an elite physiscist and he says Star Trek really does a good job at depicting some likely outcomes of technology as we know it today. For example, Star Trek's version of fusion is "laser fusion" which is one of the fusions that is most promising, Star Trek has used laser fusion in some of the episodes apparently correctly too.
