Pope Confesses: 'Computer Changed Even My Life'

ROME (Reuters) - Pope John Paul finally confessed before the world Tuesday.

The computer has changed even his life.

''Computers have changed the world quite a bit and certainly my life,''
the Pope said in an unprepared comment during a visit to
the Luiss University, one of Italy's most prestigious private schools.

The 78-year-old Pontiff was responding to a gift of computers from Luiss students to the Pope which were destined for African countries.

Aides say the Pope is in some ways one of the world's last remaining Luddites in a position of power.

He still prefers to write most of his speeches by hand in Polish. They are later transcribed by aides.

But he did allow the Vatican to go on line in a big way several years ago with its own Internet homepage.

Now, whether he likes it or not, nearly every word he utters or writes goes straight onto the world wide web at a speed rivaling that of a prayer to heaven.
