Brian if you don't know which way to go you might think about buying some calls here at relatively cheap prices..That is in the money calls expiring at least 4 months out. This will offer a low risk high reward payoff if the market takes off. Then you can buy in at these prices or sell the calls or if the market is out of it relax cause you already know what your downside is. US options offer the advantage of call in the option anytime after buying the option.

May you Trades Go well

If you do NOT look at your stock portfolio EVERY DAY, then by all means by long and forget about it. HOWEVER, if you DO check your stocks every day, or several times thoughout the day, then you WILL go crazy watching them, because they won't bounce up and down like just about all the others seem to do like DELL YAHOO! COKE MCDONALDS INTEL MSFT and about anything else (it seems). How can one go wrong with SLB ? DO ? ATW ? UTI ? RIG ? RON ? HAL ?, too many to mention.
