A reduction in backlog should not be viewed as offsetting an increase in new orders. If there had been no reduction in backlog, the sales would have been lower, and therefore AMAT's book-to-bill would have been higher. Therefore the reduction in backlog made the book-to-bill look worse than it otherwise would have been. (Note AMAT's BtB is now greater than 1:1 for the first time in a long time.)
