COMDEX Fall 98

Booth L2612

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1998--Philips Electronics, a pioneer in the development of digital
technology, today introduced at COMDEX (Booth #L2612), its first DVD player for professional applications, the
Philips DVD170. With unprecedented multi-standard video capabilities and easy connectivity options for a variety of
devices including computers, touch screens and bar code readers, the Philips DVD170 delivers a world of professional
options in one affordable, high-powered video playback source. The product joins a successful and diverse line of Philips
DVD-video players marketed to consumers.

"Philips and its Professional Producer Partners have had a leading role in many optical disc based multimedia applications
such as employee training, sales detailing, exhibitions, site-based advertising, point of sale, and education," explained
Robert Harris, vice president and general manager of Philips Consumer Electronics Interactive Products group. "Based
on years of experience and success we understand the importance of products that are specifically designed to meet the
unique requirements of professional multimedia developers and their clients. We feel that the DVD170 will exceed most
of these expectations."

Plug and Play with Just About Anything

Since many professional applications demand connectivity to a wide variety of peripheral devices such as touch screens,
touch pads, bar code readers, and other external controlling devices, the DVD170 provides easy connection via a
standard RS232 computer interface port. This connectivity allows a variety of applications to be designed for point of
sale/information kiosks, training systems, site-based advertising and education.

In addition, the DVD170 is equipped with dual laser pickup, that allows for optimized playback of all popular CD
formats: DVD, VideoCD, and AudioCD. Of particular importance to professional multimedia developers, the DVD170
also will play CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-R discs critical to the development process and most business applications.

An International Solution

The most affordable professional DVD player in the industry, the Philips DVD170 is also a world-wide solution
provider. Designed to handle both the NTSC and PAL video standards, the Philips DVD170 is the only multi-standard
professional DVD-video player in the industry. Businesses with international locations no longer have to worry about
purchasing different video equipment for different countries--the Philips DVD170 is a true international player.

More Room Than Ever Before

An excellent choice for professional video applications because of its capacity, the DVD format can support up to eight
language soundtracks and 32 subtitle languages, allowing maximum playback flexibility for international presentations and
training, point of information displays, point of sales kiosks, site-based advertising and classroom settings.

In addition to the DVD format's large storage capacity, the Philips DVD170 also includes NV-RAM for non-volatile
storage of data. The NV-RAM allows developers to create DVD programs that can store test data in training
applications, or sales and marketing information in retail point-of-sale applications.

For Your Protection

To safeguard DVD player and content investments in demanding public environments, the Philips DVD170 features a
unique "Protected Mode" option. This feature allows interactive multimedia developers and their clients to design
unattended displays or kiosks knowing that the Philips Protected Mode will guard their investment by disabling all front
panel controls thereby preventing unauthorized disk-swapping or tampering with the performance of the DVD player.
The end result, confidence that the designed message continues to run uninterrupted.
