The #1 Stock of 1999

"Inside, you'll discover the amazing story of one stock that has it all: a breakthrough concept...a huge, untapped market...a proven track record...and explosive growth. But you need to buy it, now!"

That's the teaser from the latest mailer from Carlton Lutts and his Cabot Market Letter that landed in my mailbox. Here's a shocker: For once I agree with him. A reading of the tout about "Company K" reveals that it is in fact a company I've considered a core holding for many years: EMC. The proof of the identification is to be found in this part of the tout: "Visa recently found that using Company K's solution reduced the time required to back up and restore its more than two terabyte testing database from 10 hours to just 15 minutes!" (p. 9)

Compare this with EMC's December 21st press release at emc.com in which we read: "Visa has reduced the time required to back up and restore its more than two terabyte testing database from 10 hours to 15 minutes."

EMC is hardly an unknown company, boasting the second best 10-year return of any stock with the exception of DELL (a statistic I expect to see reversed when the 11-year returns are tallied). It's also a little unusual for Lutts since it is an institutional favorite and far too large for his followers to have any impact on its trading. Perhaps he's gotten tired of flogging PRST (nowhere to be found in this current letter) and is going for quality?
