Ascend Rises on Expected Sales of Stratus Units

Alameda, California, Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Ascend Communications Inc. shares rose 1.8 percent after the computer- networking company unveiled a key product and said it's close to selling three units of a recently acquired company.

The shares of Alameda, California-based Ascend climbed 15/16 to 53 15/16 in trading of 7.91 million. Earlier, the shares touched a 52-week high of 55 15/64.

Ascend executives said yesterday that the company is shipping a new product that makes it easier for phone companies to handle Internet traffic. It's the first equipment using technology from Stratus Computer Corp., which Ascend bought last month for $822 million. Ascend Chief Financial Officer Michael Ashby also said the company is in final talks with buyers for each of three Stratus units that are up for sale.
