1. Could I use my PC ( Compaq 350mhz,, 64mb of RAM, plenty of hard drive) as a server?

you could use a PC Xt as a web server if you really wanted...

There are many factors to consider like # of vistors per day, # of hits per day, amount of server side programs running, traffic in MB per day, etc....

2. If I could get a ADSL line would that be sufficient for web hosting purposes or would I need to get a more expensive T-1 line?

See response to 1.

3. internic.net

That all said I doubt you can beat the price of virtual hosting except for large applications. Customers always come to me wanting a web server then I explain the costs and show them virtual hosting and they always choose virtual hosting....

Do it yourself Web Hosting

I do not think you can come close to matching a good Web Hosting Service. Speed is the most important issue IMO for a web page. A slow service or a page full of graphics and java and ads will drive people away.

The good services will have multiple connections to the Web. The cost is so low that I do not think an end user can compete.

Given a fast reliable connection one still needs good machine if you plan on being successful. You should look at server types of machines..multitasking is what you need. Dual processors, lots of RAM, SCSI harddrives and NT or Unix or ?

For $15.95 per month Webaxxs webhostlist.com has 300 MB web space. They have been rising in the ratings webhostlist.com

Tabnet tabnet.com has very fast connections. They were recently bought by Verio. I do not know if that will affect their ratings.

Namesecure namesecure.com will register a domain with Internic (url in Sean's post) and provide email and domain forwarding for $25 per year and a $25 set-up fee. The email forwarding is a good way to maintain a constant email address if you change your ISP. You also get unlimited aliases ie bob@yourdoain.com, alec@yourdomain.com, cheryl@yourdomain.com. They do not have web hosting services.
