Any comment welcome.

The first problem I see is the cost of the connection to an Internet Service Provider, ISP. I doubt if I you could use a normal connection. I suspect the ISP would require you to use a dedicated connection. I will check further but I estimate the cost for a dedicated connection at around $50 to $100 per month. About once a twice a day the outfit that assigns internet addresses advertises on CNBC. I will try to pay attention the next time I hear the ad and hopefully pass on additional information to you. Some ISPs include the capability for hosting a user's web page, with a maximum size of 5 to 10 megabytes, in the monthly fee. This could be a low cost alternative. You might check to see if your ISP or another ISP in your local area provides this capability. Another problem is security. That is setting up a fire wall so outsiders only have access to what you want them to have to and not to your private files.

As far as the number of hits, number of users and how to increase the speed of your server I say these are the last things you need to worry about. Unless you have something really interesting to post or a large number of friends you more likely will be disappointed in the number of visits to your site. I have visited several small hobby sites that had gotten less than 1000 hits in 6 months.

A good place to start with this project is to discuss what you want to do with your your ISP. Three to one says he can give you much better information than I did. Yes the tone of this message is pessimistic but good luck with your project.

Here is the cost for a dedicated line from one ISP. Information obtained at rmci.net

"Business Frame x2 is a dedicated dialup with up to 56Kbps connections to the Internet for your whole network. This package can support from 1 to 20 users depending on usage patterns and is the ideal connection type for the small office environment.

Equipment Requirements
Router -- Microrouter -- 900I --$995.00
Modem -- US Robotics x2 Modem -- $199.00
Cost
RMC Internet Services Installation -- $250.00
RMC Internet Services Recurring -- $149.95
Local Loop -- The only US West circuit for this account is a regular US West business phone line dedicated for the Internet connection."

There is a one time charge of $100 to register a domain name. This is good for two years and there after a $50 annual renewal fee.

You can also get a regular internet account from RMC which includes five megabytes of storage space for hosting a web page on their server for $19.95 per month or 10 megabytes of storage space on their server for hosting a web page for $24.95 per month. By regular account I mean an unlimited web surfing account.

Assuming I have a typical size web page,, say 2-5mb?? Also how would you increase the performance of my "server" ,, faster processor,, more RAM??

There is no reason to increase the performance of your server. With a web page size of five megabyte and 64 megabytes of memory you can easily keep all of your web page information permanently stored in memory. With all of the information permanently stored in memory your server will for all practical purposes instantly fulfill any request for information. This is instantaneous compared to the speed you can download data to your ISP. Hence the next obvious choice to improve the performance is to get a faster internet connection. For example ISDN, DSL, Frame Relay or T1. Are you sure you are a college student?
