Well, yes and no. If the stock is liquid enough your brokerage
house would just find someone else to borrow the shares from.
That's one reason shortsellers typically avoid non-liquid stocks
with few shares out.

There were so many people willing to sell BXM in the end that
shorters had no problem buying back their positions.
