Perhaps what you were describing was knowledge that I learned back in my Atari days which I now take for granted. I supposed that was common knowledge to any CS junkie.

That is exactly what I was talking about. A lot of what you do instinctively, today's programmers that are learning to code know nothing about. This is a problem that will only get worse. By forcing them to be conscious of things for just one semister would deinfitely help IMHO.
