Patents - Abstracts alone do not help. The individual specs (claims) have to be compared for a better understanding of a patent's merits relative to competitors' position. When a technology field is "crowded" with patents, patents do not stop anyone from doing business. It is a question of getting a license to practice the art (that could be infringing), paying an appropriate royalty for the right to practice, etc. Royalty expenses are normally included in the profit analysis. Certain patents or a strong portfolio can be used as a negotiating tool. For a technology company, patents and royalty issues are routinely handled as part of doing business. As an investor, I am more interested in technology's commercial success, market size, margins, and earnings growth. Ram
