Fall 1998 Conference to Explore Solutions for High-Speed Access Deployment RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ - The ISP Business Forum, an independent, non-profit association of progressive North American Internet Service Providers (ISPs), will tackle the issue of gaining local loop access to deploy Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and PSTN voice services at its Fall 1998 conference. The conference, slated for December 6-8 in Monterey, California, is open to all North American ISPs and will examine issues related to its theme, ''The Next Frontier: High-Speed Internet Access-an Industry Rallying Call.'' The conference agenda will feature working-group sessions dealing with legal and regulatory issues concerning ISPs and the local loop, business models for high-speed access services, and how to become an ISPCLEC or partner with one to offer Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) services. The objective is to develop strategies and a unified voice to resolve critical industry issues and to launch industry activities that will continue into 1999. ''The ISP Business Forum allows service providers an avenue to discuss common technology and business issues,'' said Greg Howard, director of Service Provider Programs at Infonetics Research. ''The rate of technology development, for example DSL, creates a fast pace environment where service providers must make critical technology decisions based on business needs.'' Keynote speakers for the Fall 1998 conference include: Michael Malaga, CEO and president, NorthPoint Communications; Heather Gold, vice president Regulatory Affairs, Intermedia Communications; Tom Sweeney, senior vice president, Level 3 Communications; and Glenn Falcao, president, Nortel Networks Internet and Service Provider Networks. The conference will begin with educational sessions presented by Telechoice, Infonetics Research, Probe Research, Benchmark Capital, Credit Suisse First Boston Technology Group, and LTC covering the following topics: xDSL: An Introduction; IP Telephony Primer; Mergers and Acquisitions; and Billing and Customer Care. Organized and operated by and for the benefit of the ISP community, the ISP Business Forum includes ISPs of all sizes. The forum was founded less than one year ago as the result of conversations between ISP executives and Nortel Networks, a global provider of communications equipment and services. The organization focuses exclusively on the business aspects of being an ISP in order to further the understanding and implementation of best-in-class business practices, promote business networking among ISPs, and provide a united voice for the ISP industry. In keeping with its mission, ISP Business Forum conferences are open only to ISPs. Furthermore, product or service presentations by the corporate sponsor, Nortel Networks, or other vendors are not permitted. Membership in the ISP Business Forum is open to North American ISPs of any type or size, from local Internet-access providers to nationwide backbone providers. There are no conference-registration fees or membership dues. The forum's Spring 1998 conference, held in San Antonio, Texas, April 27-29, featured keynote addresses from industry luminaries such as Chris McLeary, chairman of USInternetworking, and former CEO of DIGEX. More than 200 ISP professionals attended the Spring 1998 conference.
