You've made an excellent point, and my remark wasn't intended to be insulting. In fact GPS is used to inventory assets like telephone poles, transformers etc. in the electrical utility field. My point was that in our current focus, the applications are fixed.

Now, for mobile applications: in 1979, we automated two 9,000 tonne freighters (Frank H. Brown and Klondike) for the White Pass and Yukon Route that carried cargo from Vancouver to Skagway and back. These we replaced the crews on the vessels with a small (our first SCADA) controller that allowed it to operate unmanned, monitored and controlled from a converted whale chaser (Pacific Challenge). With todays technology, and the new GPS interface, we could very accurately track the vessels, locomotives, et in finitum. But, focus, focus, focus. Sell what we build, not build what we sell is the name of the game.
