Actually, the medical service providers usually opt to continue life support. There was one such patient in the news here kept on support for 3 years in a persistent vegetative state. The surviving spouse kept petitioning for end to heroic means and had to go through a lengthy and expensive legal process to terminate support. The medical service providers don't want to take on the potential lawsuit which are much more expensive than the life support. The HMO is probably long since off the hook for bills since the cost of the support exceeded benefit caps.
