Don't know about JNI or anything like that
One of the advantages of a clean room development is that one is then under no obligation to do JNI or any of the other 'standard' things.

Sun owns the Java "brand," it might be the equivalent of you writing a Windows 95 clone (allowed) and calling it Windows 95 (not allowed).
HP has been VERY careful in their language - they refer only to 'compatible with the JAVA specifications' Etc. which is completely safe both from a trademark and IP standpoint. This battle has been fought many times and the guidelines are clear. A conservative outfit like HP will be sure to have dotted all the 'i's legally.
