Toy -
So my statement still stands. HP had announced that they too would develop their own mutation of Java
No - BIG difference. MSFT wanted to use their contract relationship with SUN to develop a 'legal' mutation of SUN's offering. That is a contract issue - although the outcome is far from certain IMO, at least SUN has an arguable case.

Sun has ABSOLUTELY NO BASIS for any action against HP, it will never end up in court. HP developed an independent software product which happens to execute to the JAVA interface specifications and APIs. Nothing wrong with that and no possible action that SUN can take. There is precedent for this going back 40 years.

How long do you think it will take for Sun to walk over to the HP offices and persuade them to get back in line with the pure-Java model or be taken to court for the issue to be resolve (and Sun takes the MSFT case under its belt as precedence)?

An infinite amount of time, it will never happen. They might as well try to take HP to court for making PA-RISC chips.
