A couple points about the Red Herring article...

Usually it is a good rag....this article was weak...

(1) The author mentioned that Asia only (still) makes up 6% of sales...Hello? There is a little bit of an economic problem going on over there......All other PC manufacturers are growing either below the worldwide rate over at negative rates in Asia.....49% growth (up from 35%) is not impressive? IMO, the author is stupid for including this...

(2) The main thrust appears to be that Dell had not come up with some great way to become a diversified on-line sales company....like an Amazon.com......What other major technology company has been successful at doing (what the author suggests)? Cisco? Intel? Compaq? Until now, no one (sure, Compaq has a couple things going, but they contribute next-to-nothing to the bottom-line, and won't for quite some time, if ever...)

He seems to offhandedly dismiss the power of using the Net for the sake of effeciency (costs) and effectiveness (customer relationships)..

The more I think about it...I'm surprised at how bad this article really is...the author needs quite a bit of seasoning, IMO.
