UHH-OHH!! Zip Expert predicts Zip250 "A Total Catastrophe!" Steve Gibson, an Iomega Zip devotee, predicts "catastrophe" for Zip250 reliability. He has written very popular software that analyzes Zip drives for Click of Death. He is a regular poster on Usenet. from <alt.iomega.zip.jazz> Yikes!!!!! I gotta tell you, guys ... the idea of a 250 Mb Zip drive just scares the holy hell out of me! They've done it by further increasing the track density -- which was already too high for the existing 100 Mb drives to handle. Unless they've come up with a new and much more robust mechanical system for the head positioner (I don't know, either way) this is going to cause ALL SORTS of trouble. The cartridges could have a tigher-tolerance centering alignment system than the existing 100 Mb Zips (see the underside of a Jaz cartridge for a sample) -- and if we see that I'll have more faith in the possibility, but it would raise the cost of the cartridge which Iomega seems to be VERY parsimonious about. I also don't see the logic behind holding the shipment of the $250 megabyte drive off until the Sony (HiFD) drive's release ... unless Iomega already KNOWS that the 250 Mb drive doesn't work, and is doing it as a stock-market valuation ploy. (Which would seem to be just like them.) Evening Update: Great News!!! WE have won...usb,zip250,jaz2,buz,clik!,oems etc. etc. etc....syqt gone, sony not until 1999, it goes on...don't be suprised by the shorts who will do anything at this point to drive it down....but they have lost....positive press is building, cost cutting taking place, checked with cpq today and was told that the 2 models that they have been advertising in the usa today, wsj, nyt etc. with zip is selling faster than they can make em and that most go with a 10pk....its not too late to admit you screwed up and get on board...from the amount of posts that i see rr posting (which i do not read) he must be just about over the edge....just think when we hit 20, we may lose the poor sap....good luck all
