I'm not Rudedog, but I think he will agree that the shareholders, particularly Rockefeller, came out very nicely. They got pro rata shares in the companies that made up Standard. Since these all were profitable and most are still around in different forms, it made them a lot of money. Some say the Rockefellers fortune was increased 3 times by the break up.

Scotsman's post is correct - a holder of the original Standard Oil shares was up 3X in 18 months after the breakup.
