So, given that all you say is true, and you sound pretty well informed on Rockefeller I, he and Standard Oil form a better analogy to Gates/MSFT than I thought.

Particularly in the matter of hidden tariffs as a supplement to network effects.

(Thanks for the corrections. I guess I need to read more about the history of this family at some point. FWIW, I worked for one branch of the family once, directly (face-to-face.) And I would be surprised if the totally hands-off image you present is 100% true, particularly of some of the descendants. Especially in view of the family's later actions vis-a-vis mass transit. But I don't have any historical documentation to back up what I *think* I know. Likely, there is too much other more important material to digest to ever get back to it.

One thing though. His family continued to run the firm for some time. Is the formal retirement of Rocky I really so telling? I would assume that both he and his descendants were very involved in the practices and policies of standard oil.)
