BBC: Dutch Viagra heist
Wednesday, November 18, 1998 Published at 00:57 GMT

A multi-million dollar consignment of Viagra pills, bound
for Spain, was stolen in transit at the weekend in the
Netherlands, police said on Tuesday.

The robbers made off with millions of the anti-impotency
tablets, after they had broken open a lorry in the
southern Dutch village of Ittervoort. The lorry, which had
been sealed by Belgian customs authorities, was
packed with dozens of pallets of Viagra, and was waiting
departure in a warehouse.

"When the truck driver
returned on Sunday night to
collect his lorry after the
weekend, he saw the
customs seals had been
broken," a warehouse a
spokesperson said.

The BBC's correspondent in
Amsterdam, Stephen Fleay
says that the trucking
company has apparently
under-estimated the value of
the pills, put at up to $30m.

It is only in recent weeks that Viagra was released as an
expensive, prescription drug in the Netherlands, and
black market trade in the pills is reportedly brisk, each
pill trading well above the retail price.

There have been fears that, like the drug Ecstasy, the
anti-impotence pills would also be in demand in
nightclubs or at parties.

Discos are the most likely starting point for a Dutch
police investigation launched into the robbery.
