I know HP news when it came out, and at that time, I thought MSFT should do the same. Instead of paying Sun license fee and promoting Sun Java, they could implement their own version and called it "MaJa" or something. As long as IE still works for web pages with Java applets, I don't think there will be any significant effect on IE market share. But I don't know much how that would affect J++. Good thing is they don't call it Java++, I don't think Sun ever trademarked character "J".
