cdmaOne Evolution Reaches Next Level Standard for Enhanced Services Near Completion for Existing cdmaOne Networks Capabilities of cdmaOne Evolution Already Defined in Standards LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1998-- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) Wednesday announced that the specification known as 1XRTT is near completion in the standards process. With 1XRTT, existing cdmaOne™ networks will soon provide enhanced third generation-like (3G) services today including high speed data capabilities, e-mail, fax and Internet access. ''While the debate over 3G has taken up much of the spotlight over the past months, the CDG and its member companies have worked to prioritize actual requirements and deliver enhanced services in the near term. We believe the next generation of wireless is an evolution of the capabilities of the 2G system. Our cdma2000 proposal is merely an extension of today's cdmaOne network. Whether the IMT-2000 3G effort were happening or not, we have been developing our technology to continually meet emerging consumer demands,'' said Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG. 1XRTT is scheduled for publication in the first quarter of 1999 and introduces 144 kbps packet data in a mobile environment, and speeds beyond this in a fixed environment. Features available with 1XRTT are a two-fold increase in both voice capacity and standby time, more than 300 kbps data capability, advanced packet data services, as well as greatly extended battery life and improved sleep mode technology. All of these capabilities will be available in an existing cdmaOne 1.25 MHz channel. ''In addition, 3G services are available with cdmaOne in existing, as well as new spectrum bands, an issue vitally important to established operators who may not choose or be able to obtain new spectrum. The spectrum issue is also important in developing regions considering the allocation of PCS spectrum for 2G. With cdmaOne, operators and subscribers in these regions can reap the benefits of today's advanced digital technology, while being assured that their investments are protected. Evolution from technologies such as GSM to WCDMA, however, will require significant change of equipment and costly upgrades,'' added LaForge. cdmaOne evolution will continue and incorporate the capabilities of 1XRTT, support all channel sizes (5 MHz, 10 MHz, etc.), provide circuit and packet data rates up to 2 Mbps, incorporate advanced multimedia capabilities, and include a framework for advanced 3G voice services and vocoders, including voice over packet and circuit data. ''cdmaOne is the most advanced, sophisticated digital wireless system available today. The fact that CDMA is so prominently featured in proposals for IMT-2000 is also testimony to its proven superiority,'' concluded LaForge. The evolution path of cdmaOne is laid out in the standards process to introduce the features of IMT-2000 ahead of the ITU timeline, IS-95B, recently published by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), provides ISDN rates up to 64 kbps. The CDMA Development Group (CDG) is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 100 member companies of the CDG include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers.
