I have a tough decision and would appreciate any input. I first bought 2000 shares of fore @ 24.... It had just come down from 28 and we hadnt yet bombed the drug store in afghanistan and fore had not yet acquired berkely. I also bought shares @ 12 13 and 15. I have 3550 shares and my average is 16 13/16. having said all that, I can sell now and take my chances on it going down to better reposition myself for the climb or I can just hang on and hope for a good quarter or a buyout. what would any of you do?

Are the seasoned hands on this thread ignoring that this is the Wed before Expiry Friday, or is it that fat profits blur the vision.
In other words, Is it for real this time, or should one cut and run?
To turn paper profits into real $$ or to let your winners run?
Never an easy answer but I'll try anyways
Ramesh

Networkers are the king of volatility before the net dudes show up, I might have to move over there and look for opportunity, probably not now, but after a severe correction ...

they always climb higher and falls lower than they should be, so anyone thinking that the net dudes will be up from here until year 3000 will someday get a rude awakening ...

ED, I think Fore will continue to entertain us for a while. Other wild rides may be Fibre Channel stocks (Ancor, Emulex, Qlogic, and a Brocade IPO). Other stocks to look at are Qcom, Cree and Wind. Lastly, ADSL stocks might be worth a look. wj

XYLANtrons? NNewbies? 3COMmies? ASNDites? LUcites? ALAtrobes? Never CSCOholics!

I like that!

NWX up 5% yesterday. The only real downer was TLAB. Which do I like? I like 'em all. Some of my gut feel (what I used when I bought equipment as well as stocks):

LU - The company you wanted to buy everytime you heard about Bell Labs. Been waiting a few years to buy at the "right" price. Hold 32 shares from the T spinoff. What a jerk I was...

CSCO - A juggernaut? A good company? Is YHOO? Is AMZN? Is MSFT? is AOL? Noone seems to care. They got share. They got momentum? Held shares in the past, don't now. Should've jumped in again last month.

FORE - The ATM pioneer. Sure, but didn't Chevy figure out that Ford was the automotive pioneer way back when. What they seem to lack is FOREsight. Besides a blanket view that ATM should be everywhere, they don't seem to have much clue. I have a feeling that a bunch of talented engineers at FORE are hoping for the buyout so a decent marketing organization can take advantage of their superior products. I'll hold, but am concerned about FORE's next moves. (MDFOT - I would sell my losing shares for the tax loss, and keep the rest. I read ahead a few posts). Worst reason for owning this stock: Jach...

XYLN - Superior technology, great direction, and management that doesn't cowtow to shareholders, but concentrates on making its longterm plan work. I love this stock! My largest network holding.

NN - I like 'em. They've got ATM, and although not as clueless as FORE, they made some boner moves in the past (UB). But their share price has suffered for it, and likely can eventually surpass their long gone highs of the past. I've been buying in the teens, and selling in the 20s, but alwys keep a few shares on hold.

ALA - Once they recover from bad quarter, and flat outlook, should do well. Bought some shares at 18 but sold them recently due to global economic concerns (which everyone seem to have forgotten this week). LT should be good for ALA.

ASND - Doing well now. I almost had more confidence in them before there was a V.90 standard. I wish I knew how Cascade was holding up against the competition. Will probably sell shares early next year, since I don't want any more gains this year (too much gains? Not really, but I went into margin last month when stocks were clobbered, and didn't want to stay there when stocks leapt back up, so I sold a bunch of the winners to get back into some cash).

COMS - I got a bunch of shares (long ago), and I can never figure out why I keep them. They are a decent, fairly large commodity company. As prices drop, they seem to have the most experience in surviving. If the networkers evolve like the DDs did, COMS may have the best chance.

And although you warned me about it, Ed, my top pick is DLGC (Dialogic). They are a talented company, with market leading comm products, and a dog low P/E (although so did APM at 30). Been accumulating for the past few weeks, hopefully for a blast back to the forties.

Yesterday's action in the NWX, along with some successful IPOs recently, makes me think that if you're in any of these companies waiting for a buyout, now is not the time to sell them. Myself, I'd rather hold them for their fundamentals, and a buyout will just be a bonus if it comes.

FWIW, INTC at its highs and FORE down in the teens makes recent rumors a lot more palatable.

Hoping today is a continuation of yesterday.
