Amtech(?) has the I-Pass system here in Chicago for automatic toll collection. Orbcomm is offering remote meter reading/monitoring services via low earth orbit sats. Several otehrs are in the works. There are ground based radio schemes out there as well for meter reading. Can't remember the name of the company, but it is public, and not alone. I have seen where a low power unit is used and utility people just drive by and pick up signal. Others go a number of miles. A cellular approach would be better. A satellite approach has better coverage.

<<I really like the meter monitoring idea.>>

This is being done some places on at least a test basis. Utility company van with receiving equip drives down the street and gathers all the data from each meter along the way. Next stop - sat's gather the data.
