LONDON (CNNfn) - Germany's Hoechst and France's Rhône-Poulenc issued a joint statement Wednesday confirming they are in talks to combine their life sciences businesses. After strong gains since the reports first surfaced over a week ago Hoechst (FHOE) was steady in morning trade at 78.40 marks in Frankfurt. Rhône [PSE:PWRP] was down 2.86 percent at 282.2 francs. Hoechst would be a majority shareholder in the merged company, with a stake of slightly less than 60 percent of the new firm, according to analysts. Hoechst has already announced plans to spin off its chemicals business into a new firm called Celanese. The business left within Hoechst is predominantly life sciences and accounts for about half the firm's current sales and profits. Rhône has also taken a similar move by spinning off its chemical units into the firm Rhodia.
