Tim, do you have an opinion as to how the QCOM - ERICY confrontation will shake out? On the QCOM thread, it seems the consensus is that QCOM will prevail because of superior technology, but tell that to Sony (Betamax).

Certainly that's been the case for the last century or so...and you're right, there is too much at stake for U.S. companies to wave the white flag.

As Keyenes said...in the long term we're all dead...but I wouldn't bet on the U.S. carrying as much weight in 50 years or so. I'm not sure of actual statistics, but I believe the European trading block is the largest in the world and it wouldn't be difficult for them to surpass the U.S. in GDP...China could well achieve that in 10 years. It's really hard to put things into such broad perspectives but anything is possible. I think the U.S. is still a great place to invest but I don't count out everyone else...Through the first part of this year, several European markets were significantly outperforming the U.S. for good reason. I agree with Mike's piston analogy. We're currently on the way down...Asia and Europe on the way up...of course this could take a while to play out...but I think many of the pieces that would support this scenario are already in place.

Tim, All I am saying is that right now the US and its promiscuous dollar is the only horse in the race. I am not saying it will lose in competition. Just that things will change in competition.

BTW, IT flim-flam is why our productivity growth trails the rest of the world's. Perhaps more competition from Europe would help us to rationalize this chaos of IT crap.
