Netscape renegotiating web pact with Infoseek

November 18, 1998 11:33 PM
NEW YORK, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Netscape Communications Corp. NSCP is taking a second look at its web site pact with Infoseek Corp. SEEK and may terminate the 5-month old agreement, which steers Web surfers from Netscape's NetCenter site to Infoseek's search engine.

According to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings, Netscape on November 11 told Infoseek it intends to end the current pact or negotiate a new deal.

A new agreement could change the percentage of times that Infoseek's engine is offered to web surfers when they search the Internet from Netscape's site, the filing said.

The current pact would lapse in the first quarter of 1999 if no new deal is reached, Infoseek said.

A Netscape spokeswoman confirmed the companies are in talks, but declined to discuss any terms and also could not comment on whether or not Netscape is also talking to its other search engine partners.

She noted that the renegotiations come on the heels of sharp NetCenter traffic growth in recent months and following the launch of its own Netscape-branded search option.

"Traffic has gone up more than 45 percent over the last three months," she said. "We are constantly looking at ways that we can optimize revenues for the service.

Since Infoseek derives nearly all of its revenues from selling advertising and sponsorships on its web site, a decline in traffic could hurt the company's bottom line, the company said in its filing.

"If total traffic declines or does not continue growing and if the company and Netscape are unable to reach a new agreement, it could result in an adverse impact on the company's business, results of operations and financial condition and prospects," Infoseek said.

Several search engines, including those from Lycos Inc. LCOS and Excite Inc. XCIT rotate as options on the NetCenter site.

Infoseek and Netscape entered into the pact in June, the filing said. Financial details were not disclosed.
