1) is an assumption on my part. I will do some digging around and get back to you. My guess is that it is hard to get good data about flows into the stocks, especially divided by domestic and international. Such pieces as the one originally referenced by Magner always raise more questions than they answer.

As MB said they make a lot of hay about the predominance of services as a part of overall economic activity being more susceptible to a downturn, but never really say why this should be so. I would suspect that there is a difference but right now don't know what it would be.
