I downloaded it and extracted it with winzip, installed it and ran it all in 15 minutes. It took 9 of that to download which was slow for my cable modem. The server must have been clogged with all you 56kers out there. It compared the 473 records in the limited database with the programs on my C drive in about 30 seconds. Wish I had counted that as it went so fast. The earlier versions downloaded from the Zitec site went a little slower if I rember correctly. It is version 1.01. It is much simpler in design than the older versions. Gone is the bios checker and some of the other confusing options that were disabled any way. Why confuse potential cuatomers on the evaluation copy anyway. It gives a list of non-compliant files it found on the c drive and a Compliance Unknown list that it found on my c drive. Of course the latter list will shrink when the full database is used that comes with the full version.

I will have more on the 17 files it found non-compliant. Who knows how many it will find when the full database is used. That is shocking as I have a brand new PC with Win 98, Quicken 98, and some others that I thought were pretty new programs. If this is a taste of what the world will encounter, we are in for one real shocker come December 31, 1999.

It includes a nifty little browser that takes one instantly to the Discover web site for updates - for registered users of the full version.

An extra benefit I forgot to mention is the list of unknown compliant files. I can see that a company who does not like to have personal programs and files loaded onto their PC's, will want to have the IT person print out both lists, non-complaint and unknown as the IT person is making his rounds to each work station. That way two birds are shot with one stone. Of course there are many other ways to check for "unknown" personal files, but why not check for both while he/she is at it. And of course many companies do not care about personal stuff being on their PC's.

I do not know aboutthe full version, but the lite version was fast to install and took little time to run. This will be important to the IT person who has many PC's to check. I did notice that the print function is disabled in the lite version. That is too bad because it takes longer for potential customers to look at what it found. But the effect is there and hits a potential cuatomer hard. In fact it is kind of scary to see all it found.

When we get the full version I doubt we will be listing on SI every file it found as non-compliant. People should buy the thing themselves to get that list.

Ron: maybe you should try winzip as recommended on the site. That should not have made a difference becaue PK zip should have extraced it Ok, but you never know. Did you encounter any erros when extracting it or installing it? When I was installing mine there were three files encountered that were older than those already on my machine so I skipped those. That kind of thing could have caused it not to run maybe. It runs on Win 95 and Win 98 as I ran it on both machines. The older machine is a 486 with only 16MB memory so it does not take much to run it either. Maybe the company will help you get it going.
