So what are the hot high-tech products making their way into U.S. households and which products will wind up gathering dust on the Island of Misfit Toys? International Data Corporation (IDC) answered these questions in its annual holiday season outlook, which was unveiled during a recent telebriefing. Overall, IDC sees weakening worldwide economies having little effect on the holiday buying season in the United States. IDC expects 4Q98 PC shipments to exceed 10 million in the U.S. and 25 million worldwide. Additionally, the number of Web users will break the 50 million mark, with consumer buying (purchase of goods and services on the Internet) eclipsing $3 billion. PC Market The U.S. PC market remains strong due to the success of the new low-cost segment and the strong influence of the Internet. The retail market has been heating up since July and experienced a strong back to school push that started back in September. Although slowing, the U.S. economy remains strong, and creative financing (e.g., Apple) and leasing options (e.g., Gateway 2000 Your:)Wear) are all contributing to a positive outlook for the PC industry this holiday season. Portables have picked up steam recently, rebounding from sluggish performance in the first half of 1998. The U.S. portable market is expected to experience strong year-to-year growth in 4Q98. However, new lower-priced ($1,299-$1,499) systems lie on the cusp of receding-edge technology, which may not be good enough for most users. Portables making significant penetration into the consumer space remains a question, but these devices will most certainly emerge as a viable option for small business..... .............Electronic Commerce In the area of electronic commerce, the lines between business and consumer buying are beginning to blur. An IDC survey conducted in July found that 23 percent of home Internet users buy products or services for work and almost 34 percent of business Internet users purchase products or services for the home. "It's becoming more and more important to focus on behavior and less on demographics," said Barry Parr, IDC's Director, Internet and eCommerce Strategies. All the factors that drive eCommerce are increasing, including the number of households that have PCs, the percentage of those PCs connected to modems, and the percentage of those modems online. With these drivers in place and pushing the issue, users are spending an increased amount of money over the Web. "Once people get a taste of electronic commerce it is becoming clear that many of them are getting hooked," Parr said.... .....
