THE MODEL PORTFOLIO HAS ITS ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY PARTY A year ago, Porcupine challenged me to post a Model Portfolio utilizing 2 strategies that I had developed that consistently outperform the S&P 500. Sure doesn't seem like a year has past, but, alas, it has. It has been such an uneventful year. <g> Well, the Model Portfolio accomplished its mission with colors flying. Its purpose was simply to demonstrate that one could achieve returns in excess of the Index by choosing a diversified group of stocks using proven methods. It outperformed the Index by almost 50%. This is in spite of the fact that 8 of the stocks definitely did not help the portfolio performance. The last three months have been difficult for the brokerage and industrial cyclicals, but their day will come. With the mission accomplished, I wish you well! 11/21/97 11/20/98 CHG FR DESCRIPTION SYMBOL PRICE PRICE BEGIN BUY & HOLD: INTEL INTC 80.25 112.06 39.64% CONTINENTAL HOMES (1) CON 32.56 50.78 55.95% BEAR STEARNS BSC 41.75 38.81 -7.04% BOWNE (split) BNE 18.61 14.00 -25.58% JEFFERIES GROUP (split) JEF 36.50 39.19 7.36% KAYDON KDN 33.94 33.88 -0.18% ROBBINS & MYERS RBN 39.50 20.00 -49.37% DELL COMPUTER (split-2x)DELL 20.84 64.38 208.85% RAYMOND JAMES (split) RJF 23.63 24.94 5.55% ROSS STORES ROST 41.38 34.06 -17.67% 498.82 690.87 38.50% DIVIDEND YIELD 11-15: DU PONT DD 62.44 60.88 -2.50% UNION CARBIDE UK 44.81 44.50 -0.70% GOODYEAR TIRE GT 61.19 55.69 -8.99% SEARS, ROEBUCK S 47.38 47.69 0.66% MERCK MRK 94.56 151.50 60.21% 310.38 360.25 16.07% TOTAL MODEL PORTFOLIO 809.19 1,051.12 29.90% S&P 500 INDEX 963.08 1,163.55 20.82% Note 1: Continental Homes (CON) Merged with D.
